Photographer’s Cave

Photography is so much more than just taking a picture. Over the years, it has turned into an art form. It started out as a means for information, through evidence. A photograph is proof that something happened. It is an innocent moment of time frozen forever. This and portraits were the only reasons for photography. It eventually started to mean more in the social context through industrialization. Then everyone was able to take pictures, not just professional photographers.

Pictures are a aggressive explotation of the subject and the world around them. We use them to capture experiences for nostalgia or to share with others. They can be used for good, like learning about the past or important things happening in our world. A photograph is more impactful than any other kind of communication. Something terrible happening in a photograph is stuck there forever. Seeing that image can be shocking and surreal. It will stick with you. Photography is also used to make us more comfortable. We had behind the camera to keep us at a distance from an event we are facing. We are so use to having to work that on vacation we feel as if we must continuously photograph our experiences. A camera is a weapon that can be used for good or bad.

Photography started out to be used for only evidence, or family portraits.
It slowly turned into an art form, where any one can express themselves through the pictures that they take.
We often use the camera as a barrier between ourselves and what we are experiencing. It limits our experience into a souvenir that we can have forever.
Photography is a way to learn about the past. Often images are more impactful than reading a story, so it is important to be able to learn through the images of our past.
With impactful images, it can create a change in us. It can help us to view things differently, and want to make an impact ourselves. This photo is from the Kent State shooting of 1970, and every since the first time I saw it, it has stuck with me.
